Division 1 Women 17NOV24

Woodville 13 @ Kensington 2

Adelaide 9 @ Glenelg 6

South 16 @ Henley & Grange 2

Round 6 of Division 1 Women’s Baseball gave the chasing pack a chance to catch up to the undefeated leader Sturt who sat out this weekend with the BYE. Both Woodville and Southern Districts made the most of their chances to draw within a game in second and third respectively – being split only on games played. At the other end of the table, it was a different story for Kensington and Henley who both suffered big reverses, whilst Adelaide were able to jump out of the trailing pack with a tight win at the Bay.

The Woodville Senators travelled to Erindale to face the Kensington Cardinals and were convincing winners racking up 13 runs from 12 hits and taking full advantage of the 10 free passes issued by Cardinal pitching. There was consistent hitting up and down the lineup with Indie O’Hazy-Zschorn batting leadoff recording 2 hits, Alice Brown and Jemila Dadd (3 RBIs) similarly 2 each. Amara Quinn, Beth Lee, Sarah McMahon (RBI), Darna Boers-Veen (2 RBIs), Molly Brown and Dakota Ding (2 RBIs) all recorded hits. Excellent plate discipline saw McMahon drawing 3 walks, Quinn 2, Alice Brown, Lee, Dadd, Boers-Veen and Ding all drawing walks. Defensively, the Senators were very efficient with Alice Brown taking the Win with 3 innings pitched giving up 4 hits for 2 runs (1 earned) and just the 4 walks and a hit batter whilst recording 3 strikeouts. Amara Quinn came on to relieve Brown with an immaculate 2 innings of no hits or runs and just the single walk whilst striking out 5 Cardinal hitters.

For Kensington skipper Elly Tucker started on the mound and took the loss with her only inning resulting in 3 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) and walking a batter whilst recording a strikeout before being relieved by Katlyn Brooks who went 3 and a third innings giving up 8 hits for 6 runs and conceding 5 walks in striking out 2 batters. Ella Tok returning to the mound for the first time this season came on and pitched in the last conceding a hit and 4 runs plus giving 4 free passes. Offensively Katlyn Brooks 2 hits and 2 RBIs lead the way from rising youngster Ruby Pfitzner and Bronwyn Mahoney who both recorded hits.

Adelaide travelled to the Bay to face Glenelg in a battle to get off the bottom of the ladder and jump into the top 4. This turned out to be the closest game of the round with the Angels able to put their noses ahead and hold out for an important 9 to 6 win off the back of 8 hits that included an exciting inside the park home run for Isabella Hacker from the Angels. Hacker had a great day at the plate recording 2 hits, scoring 3 runs and batting in 4 runs. She was well-supported by Monica Majcen’s 2 hits which brought in 3 runs. Regan O’Rielley, Aleesha Mead, Rebecca Murdoch and Sienna Thiele all recorded hits for Adelaide.

Defensively Angela Mourtzios was very efficient on the mound in collecting the Win from her 4 and two thirds innings which saw her give up 5 hits that resulted in 4 runs (2 earned) but issuing no free passes and striking out 7 Glenelg batters. Sienna Thiele came on in relief to record the final out and earn the save giving up 3 hits and 2 runs and just the one free pass in doing so.

For the Glenelg Tigers, it was a case of how far as they matched the Angels for total hitting with 8 but were unable to match the Angels’ impact on the scoreboard. Leading the hitting for Glenelg was Jenna Handy who recorded 2 hits and a run, plus single hits from Kylie Lok (RBI), Peyton Daniels, Sophie Wells (3 runs and an RBI), Georgia Kaluza, Rebecca Saville (3 RBI double) and Jacqui Dunn. Pitching for the Tigers, it was Peyton Daniels who took the Loss with 3 and two third innings giving up 8 hits, 9 runs from 3 walks and a hit batter in striking out 6 Angels batters. Jacqui Dunn got the final out without giving away any further hits or runs.

Southern Districts Hawks came up to West Lakes Shore to face the competition debutant Henley & Grange Rams and put them to the sword with a 16 to 2 rout from 10 hits and 17 free passes (11 walks and 6 hit batters). Deb Hutchings leading off, scored 4 runs without getting/needing a hit on 3 walks and twice being hit by the ball, recording an RBI along the way. Jess Maslin blasted her way to 7 Runs Batted In from 3 hits including a GRAND SLAM and a walk, Wendy Backman also recorded multiple hits with 2. Single hits by Sarah Short (2 runs and RBI, plus 2 walks and an HPB), Mabel Parr-Gahan (2 runs, 2 RBIs plus a walk and an HPB), Suzette Doyle (Run, 2 RBIs and a walk), Tiana Grist (2 RBIs) and Kate Cunningham (Run).

On the mound Sarah Short picked up the Win throwing 4 innings giving up 9 hits for 2 earned runs on 2 walks and striking out 2. Jess Maslin in relief was immaculate recording 3 up and 3 down in the final inning.

For the nascent Rams, the offense was productive matching the Hawk hitters with 9 of their own, with the difference in the result largely due to the number of free passes issued by Ram pitching. On the plus side Tayla Oates was very impressive recording 3 hits and scoring a run, Elyse Dolman picked up 2 hits, single hits by Maxine Saunders, Jamie Stott (RBI), Mackenzie Barnes (RBI) and Kassandra Rose rounded out the day at the plate.

On the mound Maxine Saunders took the Loss with her 2 and two third innings resulting in 5 hits and 8 earned runs from 5 walks and 5 hit batters for just the single strike out. Tayla Oates in relief threw 1 and two thirds innings also giving up 5 hits, 8 earned runs plus 6 walks and a hit batter and earning 2 punch outs.
