MARK’S WRAP UPS - WOMEN’S LEAGUE D1 - ROUND 2
OCTOBER 20 2024 BY MARK MCGARRY
Glenelg 6 @ SD 5
Woodville 3 @ Sturt 4
HG 12 @ Kensington 6
Another big weekend of Division 1 Women’s Baseball saw games at Kensington for their debut game of the season hosting Henley & Grange, Southern Districts who hosted Glenelg and Sturt who hosted Woodville. Results were very tight in two of the three fixtures with plate discipline featuring strongly and another superb performance from the State’s leading pitcher.
Henley & Grange coming off a first-round deficit headed up to Erindale to take on the season beginning Kensington Cardinals. The Ram offense simply overpowered the hosts recording 10 hits and taking advantage of 9 free passes from Kensington’s pitchers. A 4 for 4 performance at the plate from Ram Cariad Edwards provided 4 RBIs and was the standout, backed up by Pria Bholonat’s 2 for 2. Maxine Saunders lead the way for the Rams from the mound recording 4 strike outs. Whilst the Cards struggled for hits, their plate discipline was extraordinary working 14 free passes from Ram pitchers and two hit batters provided all their run scoring. Hannah Seal lead off for Kensington with 3 RBIs resulting from her team’s plate discipline. Maxine Saunders (HG) was the winning pitcher for Henley and Elly Tucker took the (L) for Kensington.
Glenelg smarting from a first-round loss to the reigning premier headed to Christie Downs to face first up winners Southern Districts and what a struggle ensued with both teams’ pitchers in form. Sarah Short starting on the mound for the Hawks, showed good control in handing out just the two free passes and picking up four strikeouts, but the aggressive Glenelg lineup took advantage of the strikes they were seeing and racked up 6 significant hits lead by Sophie Wells’ going 2 for 3 (2 RBI). Peyton Daniels from the mound for Glenelg also recorded 4 strikeouts for just the single hit and 4 free passes. Short again was the contributor at the plate for South and many others showed great plate discipline to work runs from walks and hit batters – Wendy Backman (SD) worked 3 bases on balls and Deb Hutchings (SD) walked and was hit twice by pitched balls. The result was that the Bays were able to hold on for a 1 run win with Daniels (GL) taking the (W) and Jacqui Dunn (GL) earning the save. Sarah Short was unlucky to take the loss for the Hawks.
Sturt returned to their Mitcham base and faced fellow first-round winners Woodville and what a cracker of a game ensued. It was a match featuring tight pitching and offenses matching each other hit-for-hit before a Charlotte Lightbody (ST) single to centre walked the result off for the Champion Saints. Offenses from both teams recorded 6 hits apiece with Elisa Gooley (ST) picking up 2 hits from her 3 at bats answered by the Senators Amara Quinn’s 2 hits from her 3 at bats. On the mound Sturt’s immaculate Georgia Davis was at it again, racking up 11 strikeouts for the Saints but giving up 3 runs (1 earned) before Lucy Davis came in to clean up holding on for the Win when Lightbody’s single walked the game off. Alice Brown (WV) was very consistent as starter for the Senators and went 4 innings and recorded 4 strikeouts, issuing 5 free passes from her work. Amara Quinn was the pitcher for Woodville when the winning hit came and takes the loss for the game.
