MARK’S WRAP UPS - WOMEN’S LEAGUE D1 - ROUND 3
Division 1 Women 27OCT24
Glenelg 2 @ Woodville 12
Sturt 14 @ Kensington 3
Adelaide 14 @ Henley & Grange 12
The Division 1 Women’s Baseball season continued to roll on with games this week at Kensington who hosted Sturt, Woodville who played host to Glenelg and Henley and Grange who hosted Adelaide. Two of the matches were decided in comprehensive fashion with offenses dominating and a third slug fest decided by a small margin
Henley & Grange coming off their first ever win in Division 1 took on the Adelaide Angels in what turned out to be the closest match of the round and found themselves just short of a second triumph with the Angels holding on in a very tight contest. Both teams were evenly matched, with the Rams batters out-hitting Adelaide, but in the end the Angels plate discipline in drawing 13 free passes proved to be too difficult to defend. Following on from last week’s standout performance at the plate Cariad Edwards (HG) two hits resulted in 5 runs batted in and was supported by Tayla Oates and Elyse Dolman both with two hits.
For the winners Mariah Kohu was simply magnificent in going 3 for 3 at the plate resulting in 4 runs batted in. She also received solid support from a disciplined lineup, all of whom drew a walk with Regan O’Rielley’s 4 walks the standout. Tayla Oates started on the bump for the Rams and was relieved by Maxine Saunders who took the loss for them. Keeping the free passes down will be a focus for the Henley pitching staff. For the Angels, it was Angela Mourtzios who started but it was Sienna Thiele who was able to hold out for the Win. Neither Angels pitcher got into trouble issuing free bases.
Woodville were able to bounce back from last weekend’s narrow loss to Sturt by convincingly overcoming a Glenelg team that recorded their win in the previous outing but were unable to repeat the heroics at Findon. The Senators’ 10 hits were lead by Indie O’Hazy-Zschorn’s 2 hits (one of which was a grand slam) providing 4 Runs Batted in and ably backed up by Beth Lee’s 2 hits (2 RBI) and Sarah McMahon’s 2 hits (1 RBI). In response, the Bays were able to muster only 3 hits and whilst plate discipline resulted in a number of free passes (6), the lack of offensive hitting meant that the runners were left out there. In contrast, the 7 free passes Woodville accepted were well backed up with offense.
Amara Quinn starting for the Senators took the Win recording 5 strikeouts and her relief Alice Brown struck out 3. For the Tigers Peyton Daniels 3 strike outs were not enough to stave off taking the loss before being relieved by Rebecca Saville.
Sturt ventured up to Erindale for this week’s matchup with the Kensington Cardinals where their offensive juggernaut went to town. Sturt recorded 13 hits for 14 runs in contrast to the Cards 6 hits for 3 runs in addition to the 6 free passes issued by Sturt pitchers. Leading the way for the Saints were Bianca Ramsey who went 4 for 4, Georgia Davis, Lucy Davis and Sakura Collins with 2 hits each. Every batter in the Saints lineup recorded an RBI!! For Kensington Bronwyn Mahoney’s two hits resulted in an RBI and Elly Tucker’s hit also resulted in an RBI. On the mound this week the Saints sent out Lucy Davis whose 4 innings of work recorded 5 strikeouts saw her collect the Win and being relieved by a scoreless inning from Bianca Ramsey. For the Cardinals, Elly Tucker pitched 4 innings with 4 strikeouts before being relieved by Tracey Robinson, who closed out the game.
