MARK’S WRAP UPS - WOMEN’S LEAGUE D1 - ROUND 4
Division 1 Women 2NOV24
Adelaide 1 @ Woodville 11
Sturt 12 @ Henley & Grange 4
Kensington 0 @ Southern Districts 8
Week 4 of the Division 1 Women’s Baseball season has been run and won, with games this week at Woodville who hosted Adelaide, Southern Districts who played host to Kensington and Henley and Grange who hosted Sturt. Some dominant performances from the leading teams in the competition with plate discipline again accounting for many of the scoring opportunities that were supported with timely offense. The inexorable drive of the Sturt team continued with stellar pitching and disciplined offense.
Henley & Grange were involved in their first ever encounter with Sturt in Division 1 and were not disgraced, outhitting their opponents with 7 batters recording hits - Jamie Stott leading the way with a pair, but the differential in free passes was profound and the timely hitting of the Saints lead them to victory. Georgia Davis had another stellar outing on both sides of the dish, serving up a complete game throwing 5 innings and recording 6 strikeouts to claim the win. Her 2 hits and 2 runs batted in emphasised the value she brings to the ball club. 4 RBI’s to Julie Wadham, 3 to Sakura Collins and 2 to Bianca Ramsey and Davis shows how deep this lineup goes.
Maxine Saunders in her 50th outing for the Rams started on the mound and went 3 and a third innings recording 3 strikeouts in taking the loss – she like Davis, also backed up her defense by recording a hit and an RBI for her club. Emily Parker came on in relief to finish the game. Promising signs for the girls from West Lakes Shore against a formidable opponent.
Woodville recorded a comprehensive win against the visiting Adelaide Angels outhitting them 6 to 2 and taking advantage of a generous 10 free passes to allow the Woodville lineup to exercise plate discipline and follow up with timely hitting to record a mercy win. Rebecca Mausendaum and Rebecca Murdoch recorded the Angels’ hits and the RBI groundout by Monica Majcen scored the Angels sole run. Pitching for Adelaide was lead off by Sienna Thiele whose two innings for 2 strikeouts were not enough and she took the loss. Sophie Fuchs, Lauren Hatcher and Lucy Mitton provided relief in a losing effort.
The Senators were lead in offense and defense by Alice Brown whose two hits combined with a complete game 4 innings on the mound recording 3 strikeouts were a standout. Her efforts were backed up with solid hitting and plate discipline with Indie O’Hazy-Zschorn’s three runs batted in from a hit and two free passes lead the Senators. Beth Lee, Jemila Dadd and Kelsey Goldspink all recorded hits in offense.
Southern Districts were big winners over Kensington Cardinals at Christies Beach, outhitting them 7 to 3 in a shutout. Dominance at the plate was the hallmark for the Hawks with Mabel Parr-Gahan’s 2 hits resulting in 3 runs batted in, Deb Hutchings also posted two hits in a disciplined performance that saw 7 free passes accepted by the lineup. Jess Maslin’s triple was a highlight. Sarah Short returned to her winning ways on the mound posting 5 innings of work with 5 strikeouts. Maslin slammed the door on the Cardinals, pitching the last inning giving up just the single hit to youngster Ruby Pfitzner as one of only three hits by the Kensington offense. Elly Tucker lead off on the mound and went 4 innings for 2 strikeouts, taking the loss before Katlyn Brooks came in in relief for her.
Correction and apology to Kensington skipper Elly Tucker who was incorrectly reported by your correspondent as having not got out of the first dig against Sturt last week, when in fact Elly did get through 4 innings of work before Tracey Robinson came on to relieve her. Apologies and a pledge to be better.
