THE WOMEN’S DIVISION 1 SHEILD
Marg Ralston, AM was the first sports editor of an Australian major metropolitan paper when she took on the position with The News in Adelaide in 1979 until the paper closed in 1992.
Marg took on an addition role as SABL Administrator in 1984/85 & 1985/ 86 under the leadership of General Manager Kingsley Wellington in 1985/86.
She continued her involvement in sport as a government adviser including 11 years as executive director of the Australian Olympic Committee’s South Australian Olympic Council from 1992 to 2003.
Marg was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2001 for service to amateur and professional sport, particularly in South Australia, as an administrator and journalist.
In 2003/04 Marg was appointed as the Patron of the SABL which she held until 2010/11, 8 years.
Marg was inducted into the South Australian Hall of Fame for outstanding contribution to journalism in 2012.
She was also honoured at the South Australian Sports Award in 2012 for her contribution to sport, with a new award named after her. The Margaret Ralston AM “Golden Door Award” – presented to the pioneering women of South Australia who have opened doors leading to greater equality for participation in Sport.
Although Marg had minimal time with SABL she was also very dedicated to women sport and in 2015/16 Baseball SA & the Board approved the naming of the Women’s Division 1 competition the Marg Ralston Shield.
