MARK’S WRAP UPS - WOMEN’S D1 - ROUND 7

Division 1 Women 24NOV24

Kensington 7 @ Adelaide 5

Henley & Grange 4 @ Glenelg 14

Sturt 5 @ Southern Districts 1

Round 7 of Division 1 Women’s Baseball served up a couple of cracking games with Kensington facing down finals rivals Adelaide at Weigall Oval in a classic encounter. Top two sides Sturt and Southern Districts clashed head on at Peregrine Park and an emphatic result for previously bottom placed Glenelg who took down Henley & Grange at the Bay to vault them and remain in contention for what is likely to be the single available place in the finals for the chasing pack.

Kensington skipper Elly Tucker lead from the front racking up 2 hits and batting in 2 runs on offense and then almost going the distance on the mound. Tucker took the win with her pitching line resulting in 5 and two thirds innings, 4 hits, 5 runs (3 earned) and walking 3 batters whilst striking out 9 before being relieved by Katlyn Brooks who recorded a tight save and the final out in her third of an inning where she conceded a walk and a hit batter. Offensively, the Cardinals were busy with Jasmine Ledgard and Maddi Walpole (RBI) recording 2 hits a-piece. Single hits were recorded by Bronwyn Ledgard (RBI), Bronwyn Mahoney (RBI), Ruby Pfitzner, Katlyn Brooks and Ella Tok.

On the Angels’ side of the ledger their offense recorded hits by Ashlee Mead, Monica Majcen, Sophie Fuchs (RBI) and Lily Dal Corobbo (RBI). Defensively Angela Mourtzios took the loss going 5 and two thirds innings in conceding 11 hits, 7 runs, 5 earned, striking out 5 batters and conceding just the single walk. Sienna Thiele came on in the bottom of the final frame to record an out whilst hitting a batter

It was a tense finish with the Angels leaving runners on the bases as they strove to level up at the bottom of the final inning and flipped the positions at the tail end of the qualifying group.

Henley & Grange Rams travelled to the Bay to face Glenelg in a battle to stay off the bottom of the ladder. Regrettably for the nascent Rams they were on the end of a Peyton Daniels defensive masterclass with the hurler going the whole way to record 5 innings for 5 hits, 4 runs (2 earned), walking 2 and hitting 1 batter in striking out 7 Rams batters. Offensively the Tigers’ damage was done by Kylie Lok whose 3 hits resulted in 2 runs batted in, Erin Harris’ 2 hits also returned 2 runs batted in. Sophie Wells hit resulted in 2 runs batted in. The remainder of the score was filled out with 9 walks and 4 hit batters with several batters recording runs batted in without recording a hit.

For the Rams, Jamie Stott lead the way with 2 hits resulting in 4 runs batted in with Elyse Dolman, Tayla Oates and Kassandra Rose recording hits. Maxine Saunders for the Rams went two and a third innings giving up 3 hits for 7 earned runs, walking 7 and hitting 2 batters whilst striking out 4 Tiger hitters. This earned Saunders the Loss for the game. Emily Parker conceding 3 hits, 7 runs (3 earned), walking 2 and hitting 2 and Cariad Edwards came on in relief, each recording 2 outs.

Without doubt the matchup of the round saw Southern Districts Hawks host the competition leading Sturt Saints at Peregrine Park and punters were not disappointed as a feisty Hawks outfit took the game right up to Sturt. Both teams slugged it out as blows were traded with the difference in the game being Sturt’s ability to apply pressure and force errors, whilst maintaining composure of their own when dealing with the Hawks’ pressure. Offensively Sturt outhit South 10 to 6 and were able to draw 6 free passes from Hawk pitching whilst conceding only 3 themselves.

Jenny Dunn was impassable at the plate in recording 4 hits from 4 visits, she was supported by Elle Smith (RBI) and Charlotte Lightbody each recording two hits. Single hits went to Bianca Ramsey and Chantal Keats. Defensively Georgia Davis continues to weave a spell over opposition batters. Davis went the distance recording the win by pitching 6 Innings giving up 6 hits for the 1 earned run walking three and striking out 1.

The Hawks were led by Tania Grist’s two hits whilst Deb Hutchings, Jess Maslin, Hayley Barnes and Kate Cunningham (RBI) all recorded hits. Sarah Short took the loss for South in starting on the mound throwing 3 Innings conceding 7 hits for 3 earned runs whilst walking three and striking out 3 Saints’ batters. Jess Maslin came on to finish the game throwing 3 Innings of relief, conceding 3 hits for 2 unearned runs and walking two batters and hitting one. Many positives to be taken by both clubs who now sit 1 and 2 in the League after the first full round of matches.
