ROB’S RECAPS - STATE LEAGUE D1 - ROUND 7
NOT A GOOD DAY FOR EXCITING BASEBALL
By Robert Laidlaw
THE CLOSEST GAME IN round seven of division one baseball was Sturt’s 7-1 victory over East Torrens at Payneham.
It was tight early, until the Saints scored four runs at the top of the third inning, on five walks, a hit batsman and Jackson Brebner-Russ’ single.
East Torrens managed a run in the bottom of the fourth, after Dalton Probert was hit by a pitch, Aiden Lucas’ single, a double steal, and Carter Powell’s RBI groundout.
But that was it until Sturt scored twice in the eighth on Mitch Lightbody’s two-run home run and one in the ninth on Harry Knuckey’s RBI single, to make it 7-1.
Austin McLure pitched seven innings for the win, conceding four hits for six strikeouts.
IT WAS PARTY TIME AT Karbeethan Reserve, where Jack Partington led Henley & Grange to a comprehensive 15-3 victory over Gawler Rangers.
Partington collected five hits including a home run, scored four times and batted in five runs.
In the first inning Partington singled, stole second base and came home on Patrick Inglis’ sac fly.
Then at the top of the third the Rams scored four times to go 5-0 up. Partington singled, two walks, Yonezawa had a RBI single and Luke Trevaskis hit a two-run double.
Henley then made the game safe with a five-run fifth dig, which was fuelled by back-to-back two-run two-baggers to Partington and Liam Bull.
Another two runs at the top of the sixth made it 12-0, with Gawler managing three runs in the bottom of the seventh, after Noah Okeil singled, Zak Heintze-Unger was hit by a pitch, two RBI groundouts (Aiden Prokopec and Tom Galgey), and Sam Bawden’s RBI single.
Then to complete the big win, Partington smashed a three-run home run at the top of the eighth frame.
Jordan Hodges threw 3.1 innings for the win, conceding four hits for six strikeouts, while Rams starter Jordy Gross gave up four hits for eight K2s in 4.2 frames.
CONSISTENT BATTING AND SOLID PITCHING was the formula that drove Southern Districts to a 10-0 victory over Goodwood at Christie Downs.
Hawks’ pitcher Tomoya Kamakani threw eight shut-out innings, conceding four hits for nine strikeouts.
South scored twice in the third frame, after four walks and hits to Brett Hattersley and Nic Paparella.
Then in the fourth, Kamakani hit a two-run single, and in the seventh, Tailen Hobson hit a two-run double to make it 6-0.
A four-run eighth mercied the game. Paparella led off with a hit, then after a pair of walks and two errors, Hobson hit a two-run single to walk it off.
A FIVE-RUN SECOND INNING set up Woodville’s 10-0 victory over Kensington at Erindale.
That five-run rally included an error, a hit batsman, and hits to Troy Nicholson, Hayden Carroll, Jose Castellano and Drew Janssen (two RBIs).
The Senators just kept adding on, with a run in the fourth (Oliver Hayes doubled and scored on groundout), one in the sixth (on a wild pitch) and the seventh (Nicholson doubled and came home on Carroll’s single), and two in the eighth (RBI hits to Alfredo Rodriguez and Arwando Ramirez).
From the mound Nicholson went the distance, conceding four hits for eight strikeouts in eight innings.
PORT ADELAIDE RECOVERED FROM a slow start to beat Golden Grove Central Districts 15-6, after trailing 3-1 going into the sixth inning at Illyarrie Reserve.
At the top of the opening frame, Nick Vasic walked, Flynn McKee singled and Dayton Mitchell hit a sac fly for the Magpies to take a 1-0 lead.
But then the Dodgers took over, with Daniel Youngblood hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the scores, then took the lead on Jake Shotton’s RBI single in the third, and extended it to 3-1 in the fifth, when Youngblood doubled and came home on Shotton’s single.
Port then broke the bats out to score 14 runs over the game’s final four digs, and held the Dodgers to three tallies, in the bottom of the ninth.
A two-run single by Ryan Schrapel and Will Paech’s RBI double at the top of the sixth saw the Magpies grab a 4-3 lead.
Mitchell smashed a two-run dinger in the seventh, and in the eighth, consecutive hits to Brodie Arriola, McKee, Mitchell, Ethan Murphy and Tommy Bird saw another six runs, and a 12-3 advantage.
A run of four consecutive hits to Arriola, McKee, Mitchell and Murphy in the ninth recorded another three runs, while in the bottom of the frame, Shotton smashed a three-run double for the home side.
Tommy Bird pitched five frames for the win, conceding five hits for six strikeouts, while reliever Todd Trebilcock pitched three hit-less innings for two K2s.
BEHIND SUPERB PITCHING BY Masa Sawada, West Torrens beat Glenelg 10-0 at the Bay.
Sawada threw six innings for just one hit, while striking out seven batters, to keep the Tigers in check.
The Eagles batters did the job to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
At the top of the first, consecutive two-out hits to Mason Clavell, Austin Gallagher, Tom McGarry and Jacob Scott saw two runs in, while in the second, Nico Vanderlinden doubled and came home on Nick George’s single.
In the fourth the Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with four runs, after hits to Nico Vanderlinden, Clavell, Gallagher and Tom McGarry.
In the seventh, hits to James McFarlane, Nico Vanderlinden and Sam McGarry saw another three tallies, for the mercy rule to be evoked.
ADELAIDE ALWAYS SEEMED TO be in control at Plympton against Northern Districts, eventually winning 14-5.
Ty Forney singled and scored on Stefan Welch’s groundout in the bottom of the opening frame to make it 1-0.
The Reds came back with a run at the top of the second, on Steven Matulic’s RBI single to make it 1-1.
But the Angels took the lead right back in the bottom of the second, after Henry Cann’s hit and a couple of errors, with three runs and a 4-1 lead.
Two-run hits to Rahmen Martinez and Riley Yeatman in the third made it 8-1, and in the fourth, Ben Ganley put one over the fence, then the following inning hit a two-run single, to make it 11-1.
North struck back at the top of the seventh with three runs, after hits to Tom Regnier, Tyson Hee, Albert Dominquez and Cameron Dziego.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth, Adelaide via Lachlan Pace’s RBI triple and the Reds on Hee’s RBI single.
Tom Ganley pitched three no-hit innings in relief for the Angels, collecting four strikeouts.

BASEBALL (November 26, 2024)
PEREZ WALKS IT OFF
By Robert Laidlaw [photos Paul Taeuber]
TRAILING BY A RUN, WOODVILLE’S Cesar Perez hit a walk-off two-run double for the Senators to win 5-4 against East Torrens at Findon in mid-week division one baseball.
It was the bottom of the seventh and final inning, when Woodville loaded the bases with one out, on Greg Bravo’s infield hit and two walks, to set up Perez’s big moment.
The Redsox broke through first, at the top of the third frame with two runs, when Mark Stewart doubled and Dalton Probert smashed a two-run dinger.
But the Senators responded immediately, in the bottom of the third, when, with two out, Perez walked, Drew Janssen singled and Wade Moore hit a two-run double, for a 2-2 scoreline.
Then it was East Torrens’ turn to again take the lead, when, at the top of the fifth dig with two out, Aidan Lucas walked, Jay Sanderson singled and went to second base on the throw, and Charlie Ashcroft had a two-run hit up the middle, 4-2 the Redsox.
Woodville pulled one run back in the bottom of the sixth when Janssen put one over the centrefield fence.
After the Redsox failed to score off Perez, who came in to pitch the seventh inning, it led to his heroics with the bat – the winning pitcher and the winning hit!
ANOTHER EXCITING WALK-OFF happened at West Lakes, when Wilson Lee hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to lead Henley & Grange to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over West Torrens.
The Rams were actually 5-3 down at the start of that final inning, but Jordan Hodges led the dig off with a solo home run, before Liam Bull had walked to set up Lee’s dinger.
At the top of the second frame the Eagles took a 1-0 lead on Jacob Scott’s home run, and went 4-0 up in the third, on Mason Clavell’s three-run dinger.
A Jack Partington RBI single after Hodges had doubled in the bottom of the third started Henley’s scoring, while in the fourth, three walks and RBI hits to Partington and Bull made it a 4-3 ballgame.
It looked like West Torrens was in control with a run at the top of the fifth, when Nick George walked, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and groundout, and came home on Clavell’s sac fly, before Lee’s heroics in the final frame.
Lee started for the Rams and pitched 4.2 innings for two hits (both home runs) and nine strikeouts, with Partington taking the win in relief.
A TEN-RUN THIRD INNING paved the way for Adelaide’s 12-1 victory over Port Adelaide at Plympton.
The Angels scored twice in the opening frame, when Ty Forney and Liam Spence singled, and came home on Billy Damon’s hit up the middle.
Then at the top of the third dig the Magpies struck with a run, after Nick Vasic walked Flynn McKee singled and Dayton Mitchell had a RBI hit.
It was all over red-rover after the bottom of the third, as Adelaide completely dominated. Henry Cann had a two-run double, Damon and Chris Congdon had RBI single, and Spence smashed a three-run dinger.
Riley Yeatman threw 4.1 innings for three hits and six strikeouts to claim the win.
BEHIND A SOLID PITCHING performance by Carsen Angeroth, Glenelg beat Goodwood 6-3 at Mortlock Park.
The Indians were first to strike, in the bottom of the second, when Tom Fiebig walked, went to second base on a wild pitch and scored on Josh Bradley’s single – the only hit off Angeroth in five innings (for six K2s).
At the top of the third frame, Jacob Eldridge walked, followed by hits to Jaikob Mathews, Tom Huttunen, Zane Judd and Tyson Arnold, with the Tigers scoring three times to go 3-1 up.
Another run in the fourth, after hits to Elliott Ross and Eldridge, and two in the fifth, on RBI hits to Dylan Bentley and Eldridge, saw the lead out to 6-1.
Goodwood took advantage of a change of pitcher in the bottom of the sixth and final inning to score twice, after hits to Brodie Heaps and Darren Fidge, and four walks.
GAWLER RANGERS PROVED TOO STRONG for Kensington at Karbeethan Reserve, and ran out 8-2 victors.
In the bottom of the third frame the Rangers scored three runs, after Noah Okeil singled, three walks, Seb Heintze-Unger RBI ground-out and Aidan Prokopec’s RBI double.
The Cardinals managed a pair of runs at the top of the fourth, after Tyler Butterfield picked a two-out walk and Michael Bishop smashed a two-run dinger.
Gawler then made the game safe with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth, after hits to Brad Przibilla, Zac Heintze-Unger, Dylan Child, Sam Bawden and Tyler Renken.
Seb Heintze-Unger started on the mound for the Rangers and pitched four innings for one hit and five strikeouts. He retired the first 11 batters he faced.
A SIX-RUN THIRD INNING did most of the damage for Sturt, as it beat Golden Grove Central Districts 10-3 at Illyarrie Reserve.
Simon Baumer had a RBI single to give the Saints a 1-0 start in the opening inning, then in the third, Jackson Brebner-Russ hit a two-run single and Tyson Ottaway smashed a three-run dinger to see Sturt 7-0 up.
The Dodgers managed one run in the bottom of the fourth, before Sturt added three more at the top of the sixth, including RBI hits to Baumer and Matt MacBeth.
With hits by Branden Manzella, Jake Shotton and Noah Rodgers the Dodgers managed the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth dig.
Damon Arnold pitched six innings for the win, conceding five hits for eight strikeouts.
IT WAS ANOTHER BIG INNING in Southern Districts victory over Northern Districts at Ingle Farm, as the Hawks scored seven runs in the first frame on the way to an 11-2 victory.
The Reds just couldn’t seem to get anyone out at the start of the game, as South ran riot.
Jake Campbell led off with a walk, Luke Hansen singled, Nic Paparella hit a RBI double, Brett Hattersley belted a three-run dinger, Tamoya Kamakani doubled and Ben Short had a RBI single, all before an out was made.
The rest of the game for the Hawks was almost a Nic Paparella show, as he hit two home runs to bat in three of South’s final four runs, to bat 1000 with four hits, a walk, and five RBIs.
North scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, after hits to Koda Vivar, Tyson Hee and Cam Dziego, and another in the sixth, when Albert Dominquez doubled and came home on Nick Clifton’s single.
