Round 9 of Division 1 Women’s Baseball returned on Sunday with Henley and Grange Rams coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season heading to Plympton for a date with the Adelaide Angels, Woodville Senators were hosted at the Bay by Glenelg Tigers and the Kensington Cardinals ventured up the hill to the Sturtress that has become Norman Reserve. Results followed an expected pattern of outcomes with the higher placed teams picking up wins at the expense of those teams below them on the table.
The Adelaide Angels coming off the Bye picked up a handy win against a surging Henley and Grange Rams team fresh off consecutive wins. The Rams out hit the Angels 10 to 6 but their pitching conceded 13 free passes (6 walks and 7 hit batters) proved costly with the Angels defense giving up just the 4 free passes.
For Adelaide Reagan O’Rielley had 2 hits for 3 runs batted in, Ashlee Mead had a hit and an RBI as did Monica Majcen, Isabella Hacker and Sophie Fuchs each had hits. Rebecca Mausenbaum (2) and Lily Dal-Corobbo each had RBI’s without recording a hit. Once again it was the Walks and Hit Batters columns that were statistically the most prolific.
Angela Mourtzios did most of the work on the mound picking up the Win for her 4 and 2/3 innings conceding 10 hits for 5 runs, striking out 2 and conceding just the 4 walks whilst Monica Majcen collected the final out without conceding a hit or a run.
The Rams showed promise at the plate, with Pria Bholonat (RBI), Katrina Povey and Tayla Oates all recording 2 hits whilst Jamie Stott and Kassandra Rose’s hits each resulted in 2 runs batted in. Single hits were also recorded by Cariad Edwards and Mackenzie Barnes.
Maxine Saunders on the mound took the Loss with her 2 innings conceding 5 hits for 10 runs (8 earned) with a single strikeout and issuing 10 free passes (5 walks and 5 hit batters). Emily Parker came on in relief and threw 2 Innings for just the single hit and single earned run, striking out 3 batters and giving up a walk and hitting 2 batters.
At the Bay, the Glenelg Tigers put up a spirited fight against the formidable Woodville Senators but ultimately fell short despite finding opportunities against the visitors' pitching.Woodville scored 6 runs on 5 hits, 4 of which were batted in and drew 5 free passes (3 walks and 2 hit batters). Sarah McMahon led the Senators with 3 hits and 2 runs batted in, with Indie O’Hazy-Zschorn collecting a hit and an RBI and Molly Brown picked up a hit.
Defensively, Darna Boers-Veen started on the mound and collected the win in pitching 4 innings giving up 3 hits for just the 1 earned run and striking out 4 batters and conceding 6 free bases (5 walks and a hit batter). In relief Alice Morrison came in and conceded 2 runs (1 earned) walking 3 and hitting 1 batter without recording an out to send a ripple through the dugout, but it was Indie O’Hazy-Zschorn who steadied the ship recording the final 3 outs with 3 up and 3 down and striking out the side!
For Glenelg Jenna Handy (RBI), Sophie Wells (RBI) and Jacquie Dunn all registered hits, Erin Harris registered 2 runs batted in without recording a hit and the most populated columns statistically were the Walks and Hit Batters with 8 and 2 respectively.
Peyton Daniels led off on the mound and took the Loss with her 3 innings conceding 3 hits, 4 runs (1 earned) and striking out 2 batters whilst conceding 4 free bases (2 walks and 2 hit batters). Kylie Lok came on in relief and went 2 innings for 2 hits, 2 runs and a strikeout with just the 1 walk.
Sturt Saints welcomed the Kensington Cardinals to the Sturtress at Mitcham and put on a clinical display completely shutting out the visitors and working the scoring opportunities to eventually record a mercy result.
Sturt recorded just the 5 hits for 12 runs, all 12 were batted in with the offense taking full advantage of the 14 free passes (12 walks and 2 hit batters) gifted by the Cardinals pitching. Bianca Ramsey recorded 2 hits and a run batted in, Catherine Czajkowski (3 RBI), Lucy Davis (2 RBI) and Chantal Keats (RBI) all recorded single hits, whilst Charlotte Lightbody (3 RBI), Elyse Gooley (RBI) and Sakura Collins (RBI) all did so without recording a hit.
On the mound it was Lucy Davis’ threw a complete game shutout, collecting the Win throwing 5 innings conceding 4 hits and a single walk and striking out 6 batters.
For the Cardinals, Tracey Robinson picked up 2 hits, Hannah Seal and Jenny Barker each got a hit and Ella Tok drew the sole walk.
From the mound it was Tok who bore the brunt taking the Loss with her 3 innings conceding 5 hits, 9 runs (2 earned) and striking out 3 batters whilst issuing 8 free passes (6 walks and hitting 2 batters). Katlyn Brooks came on in relief and got 2 outs in conceding 3 earned runs on 6 walks and 0 hits and Tracey Robinson got the final out without conceding further.
