RED LETTER DAY FOR NORTH

By Robert Laidlaw [Payneham photos from Paul Taeuber]

IT WAS SO CLOSE but no cigar for Northern Districts in several division one baseball games this season, but finally the Reds have broken through, beating Kensington 8-1 at Ingle Farm.

North scored a run in the second inning, on Josh Whelan’s home run, with Michael Bishop doing likewise for the Cardinals at the top of the third. That 1-1 scoreline held up until the bottom of the sixth, when the Reds scored four times.

Four walks, Albert Dominguez’s RBI double, Can Dzeigo single and Nick Clifton’s RBI two-bagger gave North the front-running, with a 5-1 lead.

An error gifted the Reds a run in the seventh, and in the eighth, Steven Matulic and Tysom Hee hit singles to set up Tyson Lee’s two-run double, and an 8-1 victory.

Todd Marshall pitched seven innings for the win, conceding five hits for 12 strikeouts, while reliever Zane Tomaszek threw two hit-less frames for three K2s.

EAST TORRENS HAD A SHOCK 4-0 victory over Adelaide at Payneham, with two double plays in the first two frames and three for the game a huge factor in the Redsox’s favour.

In the bottom of the opening inning, Mark Stewart doubled and scored after Dalton Probert’s infield single was thrown away.

Then in the third dig, Kason King and Stewart hit singles, with King coming home on Charlie Ashcroft’s fielder’s choice grounder.

King batted in the Redsox’s third run in the fourth, after Carter Powell singled and stole second base, then a Jude Ard walk and a pair of errors made it 4-0 in the sixth frame.

Connor Yeatman did the job from the mound, conceding two hits in six innings for six strikeouts.

AUSTIN GALLAGHER ACHIEVED the rare feat of smashing three home runs in a game, as he led West Torrens to a comfortable 17-6 victory over Gawler Rangers at Lockleys.

In the bottom of the opening frame, Tom McGarry walked and Mason Clavell smashed a two-run dinger, with Gallagher making it back-to-back with his moon shot – 3-0 the Eagles.

The Rangers reduced the deficit at the top of the second on Sam Bawden’s home run, and then grabbed the lead 5-3 with four runs at the top of the third dig, after two-run hits to Aidan Prokopec and Bawden.

But West Torrens batters went crazy in the bottom of the third with 13 runs. Gallagher led off with his second dinger, and after five walks, Gallagher smashed a three-run blast for his third home run, and James McFarlane also dialled long distance with two on, for another three-run bomb.

Dylan Child got in on the ‘home-run derby’ in the fifth frame for Gawler, while the Eagles also managed one more run, in the bottom of the fifth.

Masa Sawada pitched five innings for the win, conceding nine hits for six strikeouts, while Rangers’ reliever Tyler Renken helped stem the flow of runs, conceding two hits in 2.2 frames for one K2.

AN AMAZING PORT ADELAIDE fightback was thwarted by Henley & Grange at West Lakes, when Jack Partington hit a RBI walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth, for the Rams to salvage a 13-12 victory.

It was smooth sailing for Henley early, as it led 8-1 after five innings – a five run second on the back of two-run hits to Partington and Patrick Inglis; and a three-run fourth, with Jet Clohessy hitting a two-run single. Brodie Arriola hit a dinger for Port in the third.

An explosion of hitting then saw the Magpies climb off the canvas to score seven runs at the top of the sixth, to level the ballgame at 8-8 – hits to Flynn McKee, Dayton Mitchell, Ethan Murphy and Sammy Steigert, was followed by Tommy Bird’s three-run home run and Mitchell’s two-run single.

A Jay Couzner sac fly gave the Rams a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the sixth, with Port again drawing level, after Steigert’s infield single and three consecutive hit batsmen at the top of the seventh.

Stung into action Henley responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, after hits to Luke Trevaskis, Boston Hodges, Partington and Wilson Lee.

And, again, the Magpies kept coming, with three runs at the top of the eight and for the third time in the game, drew level – pinch hitter Sean Bird had a two-run single and Jack Stead a RBI double.

That 12-12 scoreline was still in place entering the bottom of the ninth. Clohessy walked, Boston Hodges bunted, and Partington walked it off with his RBI two-bagger.

ANOTHER HIGH-SCORING GAME saw Southern Districts outlast Golden Grove Central Districts 18-14 at Illyarrie Reserve.

The Dodgers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, on the back of Josh Conry’s three-run dinger.

At the top of the second the Hawks scored their first run, then went 6-4 up on the back of a five-run third, with Tailen Hobson and Jake Campbell collecting two-run singles.

Both sides added a run, and then South sprinted ahead with six runs at the top of the fifth, with two-run hits from Matt Hutchings and Tomoya Kawakami, for a 13-5 lead.

But the Dodgers still had plenty of petrol in the tank and scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, with Lucas Manson hitting a two-run single.

Nick Hutchings put one out with a runner on for two further South runs in the sixth, to make it 15-8.

Then the Dodgers mounted a six-run rally to close the deficit to just one run in the bottom of the seventh dig, with Brandon Manzella’s grand slam home run the highlight.

But an inning featuring the three Hutchings brothers saw the Hawks pull away with three runs at the top of the eighth – Nick was hit by a pitch, while Matt and Ashton collected hits.

STURT PULLED AWAY LATE to beat Glenelg 8-1 at Mitcham, with the Saints only leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

At the top of the opening frame, Jaikob Mathews singled and eventually scored on Dylan Bentley’s sac fly, to make it 1-0. But Sturt tied it up in the bottom of the dig, after hits to Harry Knuckey and Mitch Lightbody.

In the bottom of the third the Saints took the lead with a run, after Knuckey doubled, went to third base on Simon Adkin’s single and scored in a double steal attempt.

Simon Baumer smashed a two-run home run in the sixth to give Sturt some breathing space, then in the seventh, hits to Knuckey, Adkins and Mitch Lightbody, followed by sac flies to Baumer and Jackson Brebner-Russ, saw three runs and a 7-1 lead.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth, when Tyson Ottaway and Jack Dawson combined hits.

Austin McClure pitched seven innings for the win, conceding four hits for six strikeouts.

IT WAS ALL OVER before it started at Findon, when Woodville scored 10 first inning runs on the way to a 12-2 victory over Goodwood.

In the bottom of the opening frame, the Senators took advantage of two walks, two errors, a hit batsman, hits by Drew Janssen, Wade Moore, Troy Nicholson, Breandan Taheny, Moore again, and back-to-back dingers by Cesar Perez and Janssen for 10 runs.

There wasn’t much scoring the rest of the way, as veteran Darren Fidge came on to pitch for the Indians, conceding nine hits in 5.2 innings for five strikeouts and only one run, while for Woodville, Janssen started and went four digs for two hits and eight K2s.

HAWKS APPLY BIG BANG THEORY

By Robert Laidlaw [Photos from Paul Taeuber]

WITH FIVE HOME RUNS, Southern Districts not only made an impressive come-back, it won handsomely against Henley & Grange at Christie Beach, reversing a 2-0 deficit to win 9-3 in division one baseball.

It looked like the Rams were in control early, with single runs in the second and third innings, on Luke Trevaskis’ sac fly and Liam Bull’s RBI single.

But that lead was erased by the first two batters in the bottom of the fourth dig, when Drew Davies and Brett Hattersley hit back-to-back home runs. And South kept going, to score six runs in the innings, including a two-run bomb from Ben Short, to lead 6-2.

Koki Yonezawa pulled one back for Henley at the top of the sixth with his solo shot, but in the bottom of the inning, Jake Campbell smashed a dinger and after Matt Hutchings singled, Davies hit his second homer of the game to pad out the scoreline.

Nick Hutchings went the distance on the mound to record the win, conceding six hits in six frames for 10 strikeouts.

A BIG SEVEN-RUN THIRD INNING laid the foundation of Glenelg’s 8-3 victory over Kensington at Glenelg.

But the story of the game was starting pitcher Carson Angeroth, who faced 13 batters in four innings and struck out 11, for just one hit, for the home side.

The Tigers made the game safe with that seven-run rally in the third frame, which featured three free passes, singles to Jacob Eldridge, Tyson Arnold and Dylan Bentley, and Elliott Ross’ two-run double.

Kensington scored all its runs at the top of the fifth dig, after hits to Jordan Spratt, Deakin Filko, Tyler Butterwick and Jack Platten – after Angeroth left the game.

It could have been another big inning for Glenelg in the bottom of the fifth, when the first three batters, Rion Sato, Ross and Deikon Burnside hit singles, but only one run scored, on Eldridge’s sac fly.

ALTHOUGH WOODVILLE WON 11-0 over Northern Districts at Findon, it was a scoreless game after three innings.

The Senators broke the game open with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth, with Alfred Rodriguez’s three-run double the big hit.

Then in the bottom of the fifth and final frame, Woodville scored six times, with Wade Moore’s grand slam home run the highlight.

Cesar Perez pitched three no-hit innings to give the Senators the perfect start.

ADELAIDE DID ENOUGH TO OUTLAST Gawler Rangers 7-3 at Plympton, with consistent hitting the key.

The Rangers took an early lead in the opening frame, when, with two out, Aidan Prokopec doubled and came home on Dylan Child’s single.

It didn’t take long for the Angels to respond, when they scored three runs in the bottom of the second, after back-to-back doubles from Rahmen Martinez and Brayden Edwards, three free passes and Ty Forney’s sac fly.

Martinez hit a two-run single in the third and in the fourth, Stefan Welch and Martinez hit RBI singles, to make it 7-1.

Gawler scored the final runs of the game in the top of the fifth dig, when Sam Paturis singled, three free passes and Prokopec’s sac fly.

Riley Yeatman started for Adelaide and pitched four innings for two hits and six strikeouts. Ethan Badcock took five catches at leftfield for the Rangers and pitched a shutout dig in the bottom of the sixth.

WITH SOLID HITTING AND PITCHING, West Torrens beat Golden Grove Central Districts 6-2 at Illyarrie Reserve.

The Eagles scored a run in the first inning, on Austin Gallagher’s RBI hit up the middle, and three times in the second frame, after two walks and hits to James McFarlane, Nico Vanderlinden, Tom McGarry and Mason Clavell.

At the bottom of the third dig, Noah Rodgers singled, stole second base and scored after an error, to make it 4-1.

In the fifth inning the Eagles scored two insurance runs, on Gallagher’s solo dinger and Jude Barker’s RBI single.

Two walks and two wild pitches saw the Dodgers score the last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth and final frame.

From the mound Clavell collected the win, conceding three hits for five strikeouts in five innings.

A BIG OPENING AND CLOSING made the difference in Sturt’s 15-6 win over Port Adelaide at Semaphore.

At the top of the opening inning the Saints scored six runs, after hits to Harry Knuckey, Mitch Lightbody, Simon Baumer and Jackson Brebner-Russ, an error and a two-out, three-run home run from Sonny Beaumont.

The Magpies managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the second dig, after hits to Ethan Murphy and Tommy Bird, and an error.

That 6-2 scoreline stood up until the top of the sixth, when Sturt scored three times, on Baumer’s long home run, with Port answering with a single run, after Sammy Steigert singled and scored on a double play.

It was that man Baumer again at the top of the seventh, who hit a three-run double, while Brebner-Russ smashed a two-run dinger, in a six-run rally, to take the score to 15-3.

Still there was fight in the Magpies, who managed three runs in the bottom of the seventh, after hits to Nick Vasic and Brodie Arriola, and Flynn McKee’s three-run homer.

Damon Arnold pitched six innings for the win, conceding six hits for six strikeouts.

IT WASN’T PRETTY BUT East Torrens managed an 11-6 victory over Goodwood at Mortlock Park.

The Redsox scored a run at the top of the opening inning when Dalton Probert singled, stole second base and came home on Charlie Ashcroft’s hit up the middle.

RBI hits to Carter Powell and Probert highlighted a three-run second frame, for a 4-0 lead, with the Indians answering with a run in the bottom of the dig, after hits to Darren Fidge and Tom Fiebig, and Henry Wiese’s sac fly.

A four-run rally, after hits to Kason King, Powell, Aiden Lucas and Ashcroft at the top of the fourth made it 8-1 East Torrens.

Goodwood then fought back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth frame, with Griffin Weber’s two-run dinger the highlight.

There was no standing still for the Redsox though, and they responded with three runs at the top of the sixth, after hits to Probert, Lucas and Ashcroft.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fidge collected his third hit of the game, a two-run double, to reduce the deficit to five runs.
