ROB’S RECAPS - STATE LEAGUE D1 - ROUND 13
HAWKS SURVIVE SCARE
By Robert Laidlaw [Adelaide photos from Paul Taeuber]
SOUTHERN DISTRICTS RESISTED A LATE challenge from Adelaide before winning 4-3 at West Beach Parks in division one baseball.
Leading all game the Hawks had to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, after Adelaide had come back from a 3-0 deficit.
In the bottom of the opening inning Jake Campbell singled, stole second base, and after Matt Hutchings hit up the middle, a double steal saw the first run, with Drew Davies’ RBI double giving South a 2-0 start.
Then in the second frame, Nick Hansen tripled and scored on a wild pitch, to make it 3-0.
The Angels finally found some form with the bat at the top of the fifth dig and scored twice, after hits to Ty Forney, Stefan Welch and Henry Cann, to trail 3-2.
With neither side scoring over the next two innings, the game appeared to be controlled by the Hawks, but at the top of the eighth, Riley Yeatman singled, stole second and went to third on Chris Congdon’s bunt, and came home when Ben Ganley reached on an error, to tie the scores at 3-3.
If an error put South under pressure, an error then opened the door in the bottom of the eighth, when Matt Hutchings reached on a wild throw and came home on Davies hit, for the Hawks to retain the lead and hang on for a 4-3 victory.
Brett Hattersley started on the mound for South and pitched six innings for eight hits and three strikeouts in a solid outing, while Adelaide reliever Hugh Batchelor kept the Angels in the game with his 5.2 frames, for four hits and five K2s.
IN A CLASH AT THE TOP OF the table, Henley & Grange managed to pinch the points in an exciting game against Woodville at West Lakes, triumphing 4-3.
The Rams scored first, in the bottom of the fourth, when Wilson Lee homered, after fouling off five two-strike balls.
Three walks at the top of the sixth set up Hayden Carroll’s three-run double, as the Senators grabbed a 3-1 lead.
But Henely responded in the bottom of the sixth with Koki Yonezawa’s two-run dinger, after Liam Bull had walked, to make it 3-3.
Then in the bottom of the seventh the Rams scored the crucial tie-breaker, when Jack Partington walked and scampered home on Lou Helmig’s triple.
Partington pitched 2.2 innings for the win, conceding one hit for three strikeouts, while Henley starter Wilson Lee had given up four hits for seven K2s in 5.1 innings.
Drew Janssen took the loss, pitching two frames for one hit and four K2s, while Woodville starter AJ Verastegui threw five digs for four hits and nine K2s.
IT TOOK EXTRA INNINGS BUT Glenelg managed to win a tight home contest against Gawler Rangers, 5-4 in 11 frames.
At the top of the opening dig, Zak Heintze-Unger doubled and came home on Aidan Prokopec’s single to give the Rangers a 1-0 start.
Then at the top of the fourth, Prokopec reached on an error and scored on Brad Przibilla’s hit to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth the Tigers levelled the game with two runs, after Dylan Bentley singled, Deiken Burnside bunted, Tyson Arnold walked and Connor Hill had a two-run hit.
Glenelg took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the seventh, on Arnold’s home run, with that 3-2 advantage huge in the context of how the game was played.
But the never-say-die Gawlerites managed to force extra innings with a run at the top of the ninth, when Przibilla singled, went to third base on Noah Okeil’s double and came home on Josh Paton’s sac fly to right field.
A RBI single by Prokopec scored the placed runner at the top of the 10th to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead, with Glenelg having the answer in the bottom of the frame, on a wild pitch.
Then after holding Gawler out at the top of the 11th, Flynn Luders had a walk-off RBI single to win the game in the bottom of the 11th for Glenelg.
From the mound the Tigers’ starter Jayden Eldridge threw eight innings for seven hits and seven K2s, while Carson Angeroth claimed the win after two frames for one hit and three strikeouts.
For the Rangers, Seb Heintze-Unger went eight digs for nine hits and four K2s, with Ethan Badcock taking the loss.
IN ANOTHER ONE-RUN THRILLER, Golden Grove Central Districts beat Northern Districts 9-8 at Ingle Farm.
The Dodgers took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first (Brandon Manzella doubled, stole third base and scored on a wild throw) and third innings (Josh Conry RBI single).
North pulled one back in the bottom of the third, on Albert Dominguez’s RBI hit, with the Dodgers then scoring a pair of runs at the top of the fourth, after big hits by Matt Phillips and Daniel Youngblood.
But the Reds then tied up the ball-game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth dig, after Joel Paulino singled, Steven Matulic smashed a two-run dinger, Tom Regnier walked, stole second base and came home on Nick Clifton’s single.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, North grabbed a 5-4 lead, after doubles to Dominguez and Paulino.
A four-run rally at the top of the sixth frame set up the Dodgers’ win, after hits to Brayden Caskey, Manzella, Youngblood, Jake Shotton and Tyler Green, and sac flies to Phillips and Conry.
The Reds kept close with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, on Dominguez’s two-run home run after Tyson Hee singled, but the Dodgers replied with Manzella’s dinger at the top of the seventh, to make it 9-7.
In the bottom of the eighth inning North scored the game’s final run, after Regnier walked, stole two bases and came home on Clifton’s hit up the middle.
IN A HUGE SHOCK, Goodwood scored six runs at the top of the ninth inning to break open a 7-7 ballgame, on the way to a 13-8 victory at Lockleys.
After the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the opening frame, after James McFarlane walked, stole second base and came home on Sam McGarry’s single, there wasn’t any addition to the scoreline until the sixth frame, as West Torrens led 1-0.
Then the Indians exploded with five runs at the top of the sixth, after two walks and hits to Billy Sutton (double), Brodie Heeps, Tom Fiebig and Cooper Pratt (two-run single).
But the Eagles responded immediately, with a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, after two errors, three walks, Jacob Scott’s sac fly, Jude Barker’s two-run single and Sam McGarry’s RBI hit up the middle.
At the top of the eighth Goodwood took a 7-6 lead with a pair of runs, after doubles to Fiebig and Josh Bradley, and a wild pitch.
West Torrens tied the ballgame at sevens in the bottom of the eighth, after Barker singled and McFarlane tripled.
Helped by two hit batsmen, two walks, Griffin Weber’s single, and Bradley’s grand slam home run, the Indians piled on six runs at the top of the ninth to set a huge target for the Eagles, which they could only answer with a single run in the bottom of the ninth, on a Ryan Broome RBI single.
Darren Fidge pitched 3.1 innings for the victory, conceding six hits for three strikeouts.
TWO RALLIES PAVED THE WAY FOR East Torrens’ 6-1 victory over Port Adelaide at Semaphore.
The Redsox scored twice at the top of the fourth inning, on Carter Powell’s home run, after Charlie Ashcroft singled, for a 2-0 lead.
Port halved the deficit with a run in the bottom of the fifth dig, after hits to Nick Vasic, Sammy Steigert and Brodie Arriola.
Then the big rally for East Torrens at the top of the seventh, when hits to Jay Sanderson, Will Couzner, Kason King, Dalton Probert and Aiden Lucas saw three runs cross the plate for a 5-1 advantage.
And in the ninth, Mark Stewart doubled and came home on Lucas’ hit to complete the game’s scoring.
Ashcroft pitched five innings in relief for the win, conceding seven hits for two strikeouts, after Will Couzner threw four frames for three hits and three K2s.
IT WAS TIGHT EARLY at Mitcham until a four-run fourth inning broke open a 1-1 ballgame, as Sturt went on to beat Kensington 8-3
Sonny Beaumont doubled and scored on Mitch Lightbody’s hit to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third dig, with Kensington responding at the top of the fourth, after doubles to Michael Bishop and Tyler Butterwick to make it 1-1.
Then the bottom of the fourth, after three walks and RBI hits to Beaumont and Lightbody, Sturt scored four times and led 5-1.
Two hit batsmen and a wild pitch saw another Sturt run in the sixth, and in the bottom of the eighth, Simon Baumer had a RBI single and Jackson Brebner-Russ hit a sac fly for two further runs and an 8-1 lead.
At the top of the ninth and final inning, the Cardinals scored twice, after hits to Jack Platten, Butterwick and Deakin Filko, and an error, to make the scoreline more respectable at 8-3.
Austin McClure pitched four innings for the win, conceding just one hit for six strikeouts.

YEATMAN OUTDUELS ARNOLD
By Robert Laidlaw [Adelaide versus Sturt photos from Paul Taeuber]
IT WAS A CLASSIC PITCHERS’ DUEL at Plympton, where Henry Cann had a walk-off RBI single to help Adelaide to a 1-0 victory over Sturt.
Riley Yeatman went the distance from the mound for the Angels, conceding five hits for 10 strikeouts in seven innings, while Damon Arnold also went the distance for Sturt, giving up four hist for four Ks.
Adelaide broke open the 0-0 ballgame in the bottom of the seventh, when Stefan Welch reached on an error, Billy Damon singled and Cann had the walk-off RBI hit.
The Saints loaded the bases twice, in the second and third frames but could not convert, as Yeatman held his nerve under pressure.
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF LOOSE pitching, East Torrens came from behind to beat Gawler Rangers 3-1 at Karbeethan Reserve.
There were several opportunities the Rangers would rue, including in the first inning when they lost two runners on base, one from a pick off at second and another base-running error – they should have scored at least one run!
In the bottom of the third frame, with the game scoreless, Zac Heintze-Unger doubled, went to third base on a close play after Dylan Child’s grounder and came home on Aidan Prokopec’s sacrifice fly.
But at the top of the fourth dig the Redsox scored a run to level proceedings, after Carter Powell walked, Aidan Lucas singled, Charlie Ashcroft was hit by a pitch and Dalton Probert walked to force in a run.
Then at the top of the fifth, East Torrens scored twice, after Troy Chandler and Mark Stewart singled, Powell was hit by a pitch, Lucas hit a sac fly and walks to Ashcroft and Probert.
Lucas pitched the final two frames for the Redsox and although waking the first two batters in the last dig, held Gawler out to ensure an East Torrens victory.
TIMELY HITTING AND SOLID PITCHING paved the way for Southern Districts’ 4-2 victory over Glenelg at Glenelg.
Drew Davies hit a home run at the top of the first frame to put the Hawks ahead, and in the third dig, singles to Matt Hutchings, Davies and Luke Hansen saw two further runs, and a 3-0 lead.
Then at the top of the fifth Brett Hattersley put one out to increase the advantage to 4-0 and it seemed South was cruising.
Glenelg threw a spanner in the works with a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, when Dylan Bentley and Connor Hill hit singles and scored on Tom Huttunen’s hit, but that was ‘all she wrote’, and the Hawks triumphed 4-2.
From the mound Nick Hutchings went the distance for the win, conceding five hits in seven innings for eight strikeouts. The Tigers’ Carson Angeroth pitched six frames for six hits and six K2s.
IT LOOKED LIKE FIREWORKS NIGHT at Mortlock Park, when Henley & Grange smashed four home runs on the way to a 22-1 victory over Goodwood.
At the top of the opening inning, Wilson Lee doubled and Adam Nicks hit a RBI triple for the first run of the game.
Then in the second dig, three walks and Lou Helmig’s grand slam home run helped the Rams score five more runs and take a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second dig, Josh Bradley doubled and came home on Cooper Pratt’s single to breath some hope into the game for the Indians, but it was all Henley the rest of the way.
Jet Clohessy’s two-run single was the highlight of a three-run fourth for the Rams, while in the fifth, Henley compiled eight tallies, with Patrick Inglis smashing a three-run dinger and Liam Bull a two-run homer, for a 17-1 advantage.
In the fifth and final frame, another five Rams’ runs, with Clohessy belting a two-run home run.
From the mound, Joran Hodges went the distance, conceding three hits for four strikeouts over five innings.
A FIRST INNING GRAND SLAM HOME RUN by Austin Gallagher set up West Torrens 11-0 victory over Kensington at Lockleys.
The first three hitters in the bottom of the opening frame all reached on free passes, to set up Gallagher’s big blast.
In the second dig, Sam McGarry hit a RBI double and Mason Clavell put one out, as the Eagles went 7-0 up.
Hits to Clavell, Tom McGarry and Jacob Scott in the fourth saw another run, and in the fifth and final dig, two walks, a wild throw and Tom McGarry’s two-run single ended the contest.
Clavell pitched five innings for five hits and four strikeouts to claim the win.
A FIVE-RUN SECOND INNING set up Port Adelaide’s 8-0 victory over Northern Districts at Semaphore.
In that five-run rally, Flynn McKee hit a double, Ethan Murphy had a RBI single, Nick Vasic batted three runs home with his triple, and scored on Brodie Arriola’s hit.
Ryan Schrapel had a RBI single in the third dig to make it 6-0, then in the sixth, Vasic doubled, Sammy Steigert hit a RBI single and Dayton Mitchell hit a RBI two-bagger to finish the game’s scoring.
From the mound, Magpies’ starter Todd Trebilcock pitched five innings for two hits and six strikeouts to claim the win.
WITH DREW JANSSEN DOMINANT from the mound for the first five innings, Woodville led 6-1 against Golden Grove Central Districts before holding on for a 9-5 victory at Findon.
Over the first five frames, Janssen only gave up one hit for seven strikeouts, and the game looked safe.
The Senators had scored single runs in the first and third digs, on Cesar Perez’s RBI single and Alfredo Rodriguez’s home run.
At the top of the fourth inning, the Dodgers scored a run after two walks and two hit batsmen, but Woodville responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, on the back of Jose Castellano’s three-run triple.
At the top of the sixth frame the Dodgers scored twice, on Noah Rodgers sac fly and Tyler Green’s RBI triple, to close to 6-3.
